In 2001, the Laguna II, an executive saloon that was designed to be a 'lifestyle vehicle', went into production. It was a time of tremendous innovation, featuring an array of new technology capabilities that enabled customers enjoy the full benefits of their vehicle.
However, the passengers of these cars still had to use keys to open and close their doors. Renault engineers determined that this was a significant issue for a lot of people.
They decided to incorporate a contactless card in their vehicles and to develop a system which would allow drivers to unlock and begin their cars simply by hand gestures. The result is the card key which is now on a third of Renault vehicles. The car will open automatically when the card is close to the ignition barrel, or the centre console. This is a genuine Renault remote control key card (without blade). It comes individually clam-packed and is ready to be programmed with Abrites Diagnostics for Renault/ Dacia Software with the ProTAG Programmer.

The hands-free card was first introduced in 2001 on the Laguna II saloon, which was designed to embody the 'lifestyle' car of the 21st century. However, despite an in-depth design brief that was based on more than 6,000 customer interviews looking at their lifestyles, habits and expectations, Renault ran out of time to develop prototypes and test every possible applications.
Fortunately, the lead of the product on Laguna II, Bernard Dumondel was staying in an hotel at the time and was using his room key to unlock his car. He thought that an automobile key could be made with the same magnetic strip as the key.
In the years following, the card was hailed as a revolutionary invention, and it is now available on two out of three Renault vehicles. While smartphones may be close to replacing it, Renault has chosen to make use of these new features without letting the hands-free card slip by the wayside.
The keyless entry system
The hands-free card of Renault was a groundbreaking piece of technology when it was introduced 20 years ago. The exterior design is the same but the technology has been improved to make it easier to use and more secure to hack.
Firstly, it can't be used to unlock the doors or start the engine from outside the vehicle, unless it is activated by the driver. This is because radio antennae "around the car" are designed to determine whether the key is inside or outside. The key will continue to turn the ignition from a distance, but not unlock the doors. This is to ensure your safety.
The second is that the system's wireless remote control transmissions use a rolling code. This minimizes the possibility of security being compromised by someone intercepting and retransmitting the control message in order to gain access, but doesn't eliminate the possibility completely. [1]
